Route Map

SOO Green Renewable Rail creates a path to export energy from the low-cost wind-rich zones of the Upper Midwest to the eastern U.S. market via the existing railroad right-of-way, starting in Mason City, Iowa, and ending at a substation in Plano, Illinois.

The transmission lines will be buried underground in the existing rail corridor which will limit impacts to the environment, streamline the permitting process and allow the project to be approved and constructed faster.

Construction of the project will directly create more than 600 temporary jobs in Iowa and Illinois, and indirectly create more than 200 permanent jobs to maintain and operate the wind farms and the transmission line post-construction.
